April 23, 2005 Field Trip to Joshua Tree Parkway

Story and photos by Pete Rendek

In spite of the storm that came through central Arizona afternoon and evening, a small group of PCC members braved the elements to photograph the Joshua Trees just northwest of Wickenburg.  The backdrop wasn’t the azure blue Arizona sky we anticipated photographing at sunset.  Instead, we were treated to deep blue billowy cumulus clouds saturated with rain, and occasional lightning and thunder.  As the edge of the storm rolled in, it made for great contrast in lighting – so you never can tell. For a while, it looked like the trip would be a bust, but as the clouds moved through, there were a few rapid fire moments that produced some great shots.  As the sun set, there was only a sliver of blue sky on the horizon to the east, just enough to photograph the moonrise for about five minutes before it rose into the cloud cover.  We ambled along the power line road heading to the highway after moonrise.  You’d think with all the photographers, and all the photo gear, that we’d have had the sense or good humor to photograph a bunch of old men trying to push Jeff Horvath’s truck out of the river bottom.  The photo would have scored well in the next competition in the humor category. Seems like it’s getting to be a camera club tradition to push or pull someone out of the sand on a field trip.  Good thing the rangers won’t let us drive off the roads when we go to White Sands next month.
